He is no fool who gives what he can not keep to save what he will not lose…
— Jim Elliot

Welcome to SURRENDER! Even though SURRENDER is a conference, it’s also an invitation. An invitation to SEE powerlessness and poverty locally and globally, to HEAR God’s heartbeat for justice and to JOIN with the Jesus who pours out his life in loving the lost and least. It’s about going on the journey together in unity with His Spirit … the journey of SURRENDER.

Streetlighters Hip Hop Cipher!

March 6th, 2012

Streetlighters’ youth are very diverse and often relate much of how they view life through the lenses of Hip Hop and its artistic expressions. In order to provide insight into the various expressions and the spectrum of people involved in being a part of its community, Streetlighters’ will provide a space at the Concern Australia marquee for people to experience the audio and visual dynamics of Lyricism, Beats and Graffiti.

MC Phenomena will provide an insight into the verbal gymnastics of MCing and will provide much enjoyment with an amazing ability to freestyle and provide impromptu commentary on the quirky nature of his audience. MC Phenomena will also provide spectators with an opportunity to participate in a workshop type setting and receive an introduction into how and where to start when journeying into the realm of written expression, it’s structure and how to package it with a beat.

As a backdrop to the entertainment of Hip Hop’s musical brand, Melbourne based Graffiti artist’s representing the Kross Werds crew will be showcasing a visual production that exemplifies the skill necessary when utilising spray cans to create the artwork that is culturally termed as “burners”. Over the period of the evening people will be able to watch the creation of a burner and the building blocks involved. From the outline to the final’s, keyline and background that will pull the production all together.

Hip Hop has solidified its place as a genuine artform that encompasses a community expression complimented and supported by the individual gifting’s that allow it the uniqueness of such cohesive diversity. Concern Australia invites you engage the sounds, smells and images that make Hip Hop a formidable and creative tool in the hands of a creative God.

Following the Youth Night at SURRENDER:12, check out Streetlighters Hip Hop Cipher at the Concern tent at 9.30pm. Get a taste of Concern as Chris Dickson – a Youth Worker at Concern Australia’s Inside Out Program and a talented freestyle rapper –  invites us to SURRENDER:12. Watch the clip!

Why SURRENDER?

February 28th, 2012

Some of our SURRENDER:12 speakers share what they’re looking forward to at this year’s SURRENDER:12 Conference:

Max Conlon, Artist - SURRENDER gives me an opportunity to network with different groups and organisations about their ministry, the blessings, struggles, which drives me to pray and support them in their field wherever I can. I have seen through the previous conferences that we can minister Christ ways, the upfront in ya face stuff and the background support, and that helped me to know what i do for the Lord is ok, as its all about expanding “Christs Kingdom”.

Stephen Said, Urban Seed - For me, one of the critical things about Surrender is taking time out to spend with colleagues, friends and fellow pilgrims who are making their way towards that time when Jesus will set everything to rights. The encouragement I get from hearing the stories of fellow sojourners, seeking their wisdom and take on my own experiences, being able to worship with those I don’t need to explain my convictions to, it is an opportunity that is so life giving, I just wished it happened on a more regular basis. It’s one of the many “pilgrimage” moments on my family’s annual calendar. I can’t wait to be encouraged, inspired, and to receive the grace to go another 12 months.

Joel McKerrow, Centre of Poetics & Justice - We are like seeds blown to the wind, scattered to far corners, sent to grow forests, forests that bring shade to the creatures burnt by the heat of a system that doesnt care. These trees need water and everytime I have come to Surrender I have been able to sink roots deep into flowing rivers and come out ready to plant myself again. Being able to gather together and be water for each other is crucial and I cant wait to drink deep again this year.
